Critical minerals and the energy transition
The transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy will need huge amounts of copper, lithium, cobalt and other critical minerals, and there’s a massive expected demand-supply gap. How can this be resolved in the context of geopolitical tensions between the US and China and the war in Russia, and could it put the entire energy transition and our climate goals at risk?
Ro has been President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) since April 2021. Under his leadership, ICMM has undertaken landmark commitments and action on critical sustainable development issues, including the first industry-wide net zero commitment, radical transparency of the industry’s contribution and performance, and unprecedented action to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the industry. Ro is a Fellow and faculty member of the Africa Leadership Initiative and a Raisina fellow at the Asian Forum on Global Governance. He serves on the Advisory Boards of the Columbia Centre for Sustainable Investment, Concordia, and Resolve.
