Thomas Heatherwick CBE

Breakfast at Heatherwick Studio

We join Thomas at his spectacular new studio to learn more about putting human emotion back at the heart of the design process as a counterbalance to the increasingly soulless and depressing buildings we see around us. By changing the world around us, Thomas believes we can improve our health, restore our happiness, and save our planet.

Thomas Heatherwick CBE
British designer

Defying the conventional classification of design disciplines, Thomas founded Heatherwick Studio in 1994 to bring the practices of design, architecture and urban planning together in a single workspace. Based in London, Heatherwick Studio is currently working on approximately 30 projects in ten countries. The studio has recently completed a new public centrepiece for Hudson Yards in New York; the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town and Coal Drops Yard in London.

Thomas has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, a Royal Academician and in 2004 became the youngest Royal Designer for Industry. Thomas was also awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2007. His recent book, Humanise, was published in October ’23.

'This book is a super-accessible guide as to why we shouldn't put up with soulless buildings and how we might change that'

Grayson Perry, in praise of 'Humanise'
