Dr. Thore Graepel
From Alpha Go to Altos
Join Thore for a journey through the evolution of AI—from his pioneering work on AlphaGo at DeepMind to today’s cutting-edge reasoning models. Drawing on his current role at Altos Labs, he will explore how machine learning is transforming the frontiers of biotechnology.

Thore holds a position as Chair of Machine Learning at UCL, and has led research teams at Microsoft Research and DeepMind. Thore co-invented AlphaGo, the first computer program to defeat a human professional player in the game of Go. Major industrial applications of Thore’s work include Xbox Live’s TrueSkill system and Bing’s AdPredictor system. Thore’s work on predicting personality traits from Facebook data served as an early warning sign about privacy concerns in social media. Thore advocates for responsible innovation and served as a Board Member at the Partnership on AI. Thore joined Altos in an executive role, building a world-class team with expertise in computational sciences. Since the launch of Altos’ Institute of Computation, Thore has held a new role as Distinguished Fellow, AI/ML, and continues to work alongside subject-matter experts to enable breakthroughs in cell health and rejuvenation.
