Gerry Butts
The future and geopolitics of climate change: where we are gaining momentum and where we are not.
Gerald Butts has spent a lifetime working on environmental issues both in the public sector and now the private sector. Gerry will be discussing the impact of geopolitical events on climate change and what it means for the future. How Russia-Ukraine provided a wake-up moment for food/water insecurity that will become a larger issue over the next few years. Additionally, Gerry will discuss the regulatory outlook and policy setting agenda for “pollutant” industries across key regions and countries.
Gerald serves as Vice Chairman at Eurasia Group, as well as Director to the board of the World Wildlife Fund. He has led Canadian and global organizations in the public and private sectors for 20 years. He has developed prowess in climate, trade, energy, and AI and advises Eurasia Group clients across these areas. As principal secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (2015–2019), Gerald was responsible for providing direction on the enactment of the government’s various agendas including overseeing economic policy, the negotiation of the Paris climate accord, and the creation of Canada’s first national climate change plan, which included and economy-wide price on carbon.
