Jakob Stausholm

Leadership lessons from the front line

Since taking over as CEO of Rio Tinto Group in January 2021, Jakob has dealt with the fall-out from the destruction of aboriginal cultural heritage in 2020 and his own company’s findings of a culture of systemic racism, sexism and bullying in 2022, all while steering a global mining and metals giant through a commodity boom. Jakob will share his leadership lessons and his vision for the future of Rio Tinto and the global mining industry.

Jakob Stausholm
CEO, Rio Tinto Group

Jakob joined Rio Tinto, the world’s second largest mining company with a market cap of ~$120 billion, in September 2018 as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer. He was appointed as Chief Executive from 1 January 2021. He has worked globally in senior finance roles for over 20 years.

Prior to Rio Tinto, Jakob worked for 19 years at Shell across Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific; 4 years in his native Denmark as Group CFO of the global facility service provider ISS and from 2012 until 2018, for A.P. Moller-Maersk, the worlds largest shipping company with an annual turnover of US$50bn.
