Lord Martin Rees

Cosmologist, astrophysicist and current Astronomer Royal

The Future of Humanity

The future of humanity is bound to the future of science, and our prospects hinge on how successfully we harness technological advances to address the challenges to our collective future. If we are to use science to solve our problems while avoiding its dystopian risks, we must think rationally, globally, collectively, and optimistically about the long-term future.

Martin Rees, Baron Rees of Ludlow

Martin is a cosmologist and astrophysicist. He has been Astronomer Royal since 2005 and is a member of the House of Lords.

He was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge from 2004 to 2012 and President of the Royal Society between 2005 and 2010. Formerly he was Director of the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge.

Martin has made important contributions to our understanding of cosmic phenomena and has also been extensively involved in issues of scientific and environmental policy.
