Suicide and Self-Harm: Can they be Prevented?

The challenge of preventing suicides, a leading cause of death especially in young people and men in middle age, often evokes pessimism. Yet prevention initiatives can be successful. Keith joins us to share the results of 40 years researching suicide and self-harm.

For more than forty years Professor Hawton and his research group have been conducting investigations concerning the causes, treatment, prevention and outcome of suicidal behaviour. He has published more than 500 papers and chapters and 15 books and is the recipient of  numerous awards. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and has a particular interest in epidemiology and clinical management of self-harm, suicide and self-harm in adolescents, media influences on self-harm and evaluation of suicide prevention initiatives.
